New Rules for Claiming the Standard Business Mileage Rate
More Small Business Taxpayers Using Multiple Vehicles are Now Eligible

If you use no more than four vehicles at the same time for business purposes, you may use the standard mileage rate of 37.5¢, starting in 2004.

In prior years, if you used more than one vehicle at a time, you could not use the standard rate at all, leaving you to track the actual expenses for each vehicle.

You may not use the standard mileage rate for any vehicle if any of the following apply:

bullet

You previously used any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)

bullet

You claimed a section 179 deduction for that vehicle, or

bullet

You used the vehicle for hire.
