When Can I Expect to Receive My
Refund?
It Depends on How You File Your Return and Whether You Use
Direct Deposit
Are
you expecting a refund when you file your 2004 tax return? It depends upon
how you file your return.
If you file a paper tax return, your refund should be
issued in about six to eight weeks from the date the IRS receives your
return. If you file your return electronically (e-file), your refund
should be issued in about half the time.
You can have a refund check mailed to you, or you may be able to have your
refund electronically deposited directly into your bank account. Direct
deposit into a bank account is faster and more secure because there is no
check to get lost. In some cases, direct deposit of a refund from an
e-filed return can reach your bank account in about two weeks.
A word of caution - some financial institutions do
not allow a joint refund to be deposited into an individual account. Check
with your bank or other financial institution to make sure they will
accept your direct deposit.
You can check on the status of your refund by using
the
Where's My Refund? inquiry page on the IRS web site, or by calling
the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954.
